Hi, I’m Allison

I’m a freelance podcast story editor and project manager with over 15 years of experience in audio production, storytelling, and non-profit and small business management. One of my greatest skills is collaborative problem-solving, whether those problems pop up in narrative structures, sound design, production calendars, or team dynamics. I give and receive direct feedback with compassion, set clear expectations, and remain flexible in order to achieve the goals of any production or organization.

I got a degree in Audio Production from Webster University because I liked to make mix tapes, and got into Community Radio because I like scrappy nonconformists. While at KDHX in St. Louis, Missouri, I produced two interstitials, The Nonprofit Spotlight and The Music Director’s Cut, and a podcast about local music called The Way We Sound. After five years at KDHX, I attended the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies at the Maine College of Art and received a Graduate Certificate in Radio and Podcasting. That propelled me into a stint of freelancing for independent podcasts and documentary films, which led me to a staff role at BirdNote overseeing all of the productions – the flagship daily public radio interstitial and podcast as well as developing longform stories. During my tenure, podcast listenership increased over 40% year over year, we launched two new podcasts, a subscription service, and innovative new series and partnerships. I have worked with dozens of producers, editors, writers, hosts, and organizations, and I’m ready to use all that I’ve learned to make your next story or production a success.

Other interests include traveling, camping, reading, film, music, fighting against patriarchy/white supremacy/systems of oppression, improv comedy, and baking.

Need help with an audio project?
Here are some things I can do:

Development Editor: You have a great idea for a story or podcast, but you need some help getting it off the ground. I guide reporting and editing, work with producers to hone story structure, identify characters and investigative needs, and keep the process moving forward.

Story Editor: You have a mountain of great tape but you’re stuck on structure. I work with you to develop a script and/or series arc that clearly communicates your story. I also give feedback on audio mixes to help ensure that the final polished piece has everything it needs.

Project Management: Calendars, hiring, budgets and workflows are not the most exciting part of building an audio story, but staying organized can make all the difference. I can set up systems and keep an eye on the details so that your storytelling can shine.

Stringer/Field Producer: You have a juicy story that takes place in the Midwest but can’t be there in person. A Zoom interview isn’t going to cut it. I can be your ears on the ground and gather the tape you need.

OTHER: I love sound. I love telling stories and creating narratives that push against the mainstream and explore new forms.
If you’ve got an idea along those lines and are looking for a collaborator, hit me up.
